I would recommend studying this formula for insights in how to mellow prominent use of a normally harsh material like birch tar. It is classic Ménardo in terms of broad strokes but full of small details.

This is a fascinating formula, but I feel honour-bound to share my learning process regarding birch tar and substitutions made….
On no account skip on the real vanilla. I tried to use ultravanil the first time round and it make this formula turn from bonfire to smoked salmon. Also, if your birch tar is anything like mine, you’ll wanna lower it significantly for a smooth result. I avoid using forever musks like exaltolide so I recommend using more habanolide and musk ketone for an inoffensive replacer for that. It takes it further from the original but not by much, and it is worth it to avoid the biohazard musks. I really enjoyed figuring this one out but I feel older than when I started 🤣 but yeah. Real vanilla where suggested, no ultravanil and half the birch tar!
